ITERATIVE DESIGN

Iterations: For this semester I had an idea to make my portfolio look like vintage/old-school retro theme. For my first iteration I tried to recreate some visuals elements that represent that era.

Reflection

What did I learn: For the first iteration I learned that the retro/vintage design mainly includes red, blue, green and mustard colors. I also found out that this style uses grainy visuals to represent the newspaper feeling.

Improvements: The first iteration only has one page and could also have more retro elements because now it has a lot of whitespaces and feels empty. I showed the first iteration to the teacher and got some feedback on what I should improve. He told me to search for fonts that suit that theme and do some research on what elements I should add to match the style. I also asked about if it's okay if my header doesn't have any buttons and instead, I have my buttons at the bottom of the page.

Conclusion: I still need to do more research on the retro theme and add more elements to match the style. I also need to improve the structure of my portfolio and add more pages.

SECOND ITERATION

Iterations: After getting some feedback from the teachers I started developing my portfolio further. I added a header with buttons that are visible without scrolling

Reflection

What did I learn: The teacher told me it’s okay to not have buttons in the header, but I should make them visible without having to scroll the page. I also learned the importance of good UI and UX which I will try to improve in my second iteration.

Improvements: Better UX and UI because now the user must scroll down the page to see the buttons. Also search for fonts that suit the retro theme and add more elements with more pages.

Conclusion: The development is progressing well, but I still have to add more content and improve the structure.

THIRD ITERATION

Iterations: After listening to teachers feedback I knwe what I needed to improve. I changed the layout of my portfolio, added a font that matches the retro theme and made the header buttons more logical.

Reflection

What did I learn: Along this process I learned things such as clipart, google fonts, better website layout and grid. I also learned that showing the unfinished version of my portfolio to the teachers is really important to progress as a developer and designer.

Improvements: I could have made more iterations and asked for feedback not only From from teachers, but also my classmates.

Conclusion: I'm getting closer to how I want my portfolio to look like, but it's still not finished. I still have to add more content and improve the structure. I have to seek more feedback from my classmates and teachers to make sure that my portfolio is user-friendly and well structured.

ITERATIVE DESIGN

Iterations: After Wouter reviewed my work he told me to do more iterations and show him my work more often. I decided to make a food delivery app in Figma.

Reflection

What did I learn: I learned that doing more iterations in Figma or Adobe will make you a better designer.

Improvements: For the first iterations the design is pretty simple and unfinished.

Conclusion: I will try to do more iterations and show them to Wouter so he can give me feedback. For the next iteration I will apply the teachers feedback and possibly make the prototype interactive.

DESIGN VISUAL WORKS

Design visual works and design tools: In this semester I also did some design works in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. I made 2 moodboards and a poster.

Reflection

What did I learn: I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator and InDesign better. I also learned about poster layouts, typography and how to use colors in a more effective way. Besides that, I learned about image associations.

Improvements: I could have made more iterations and asked for feedback from my and teachers. I still need to do more typegraphy posters and app layouts to improve my design skills. I also need to learn how to use adobe programs more efficiently.

Conclusion: I need to ask for more feedback on my work and improve my design and adobe programs skills. I will try to do more iterations and show them to my classmates and teachers.

PROFESSIONAL DESIGN TOOLS

Use professional design tools: During the the Owen Bryce branding project I decided to use his social media photo in the websites prototype. But before that I needed to figure out how to make a cut out of his photo. I used Adobe Photoshop to cut out the background and make the photo look more professional. Figma Prototype

Reflection

What did I learn: I did some research on how to cut out an image in photoshop and I came across a short tutorial on youtube explaining how to do it. I learned that I must use the "Quick selection tool" to cut out the background of a photo. This allowed me to use the photo in the Figma prototype and make it look more professional. Tutorial I watched.

Improvements: I could have added more cut outs from Owen Bryce's photos to the Figma prototype.

Conclusion: I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop to cut out images and apply them in Figma prototype and make them look more professional.
